Crustacean questions

Hello again; planning yet another tank for school.
This is a 5g, for the room I'll be in this year. Space is very very limited, hence the small size. Lone bettas are boring, imo, and the kids don't get the same charge out of killies that I do ;)
Lampy suggested shrimp, and I'd never thought about that. Cherry or crystal. She said sand substrate, plants, neutral water, sponge filter. I should have everything I need, except for a 15" light fixture (anybody have one to donate or sell cheap?)
What else do I need to know?
Any info would be most appreciated.

Go to petshrimp.com. Anything you might need to know can be found there. One word of caution though. They can get snippy with "newbies" there sometimes. I had to set them straight once. ;)
