I had to have my 2 1/2 year old cat Alfie put to sleep on Wednesday..Anyone who knows cats knows how stoic they are when they're sick and don't show signs of illness until they're too sick to hide it anymore and that's what happened. Sunday night my husband said he didn't seem right and when I went to get him, I checked his gums and they were pale. I took him in Monday morning and the did bloodwork and 'thought' he had immune mediated hemolytic anemia and his immune system was fighting off his blood. They started him on treatment for it, and when I took him back in 2 days later to rechecked, his blood work was worse, and because he wasn't responding to the treatment, my vet thinks he had an aggressive form of luekemia. The only way to know for sure was to get a bone marrow sample.. Alfie was just too sick to put him through anymore so we said good bye to him.. He was a wonderful cat, sweet and kind, never nasty or mean, very friendly and greeted everyone who came in my house with kisses..It's hard enough to put an old sick pet to sleep, but Alfie was so young, still a baby and as healthy as a horse. His bone marrow failed him and we'll never know why :-(
